Pre-Marriage Counselling / Marriage Preparation Courses

Pre-marriage counselling is designed to assist people prepare for the challenges of marriage. Rather than waiting for problems to develop, these programs aim to act proactively, strengthening newer relationships to make them more productive and resilient.

What is important to the success of a marriage is not so much “compatibility” but understanding each other's differences. Marriage preparation counselling often aims to help couples work together to complement each other's strengths and weaknesses in different areas, rather than working against each other in these areas. Marriage preparation also typically recognises that it is vital to have common goals, because if you are headed in different directions there is almost certainly going to be some serious friction down the track. Identifying your individual goals, and communicating to come up with some common goals early in your relationship, is a great way to avert the sorts of problems that develop if you fail to understand each other and make appropriate compromises.

Pre-marriage can be provided either in individual counselling sessions or in a group format. People often attend courses in a group setting in weekly sessions over 2 or 3 weeks, or in an extended day or weekend seminar. The content of these marriage preparation courses varies but will often involve an analysis of your strengths, weaknesses, goals, expectations, communication styles etc.
